PROSECUTORS ASK FOR MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR POPE
11/29/2000
Russian prosecutors today called for the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for Edmond Pope. Just yesterday, evidence was presented showing Pope had permission to buy the plans to a high speed torpedo that the Russian government says was top secret.

President Clinton has intervened on Pope's behalf to Russian President Putkin, but he says he will not interfere until the case has run its course in court.

NEW EVIDENCE MAY ABSOLVE EDMOND POPE
11/29/2000
Pavel Astakhov, Edmond Pope's attorney, said that his client must be absolved of the espionage charges because of new evidence brought forth.

Astakhov said that the Russian court has accepted a document issued by the Bauman Technical Institute in Moscow, which authorized a report that contained the plans for a high-speed torpedo to be sent abroad.

Pope, the 54 year old State College businessman, has been accused of illegally buying the plans and sending them to the United States in violation of Russian State law. The report states that blueprints for the torpedo had already been authoriized for sale abroad. This would appear to support Pope's claim that what he bought was readily available on the open market.

ÒThis must exonerate my client,Ó Astakhov said. The document was submitted to the court on Friday. The attorney said that under a contract with the Bauman Institute, signed by Pope, none of the documents he was to receive were to contain secret data.
